Root Canal Therapy
What is a root canal?
A root canal is a procedure that Iwona Wysocka, DDS, performs in order to resolve infected or damaged tooth tissue called the pulp. The pulp lives inside a chamber in the middle of each tooth.
Tooth pulp damage often stems from trauma or an oversized cavity, and it becomes infected when bacteria get inside the tooth and festers. When you don’t treat an infected or damaged tooth pulp, you can develop an abscess.
What are the symptoms of an infected tooth?
If you have an infected tooth, you’ll probably know because tooth infections are often incredibly painful. Some of the main symptoms of an infected tooth include:
- Bad breath
- A painful throbbing in your mouth or jaw
- Tooth soreness, especially when chewing
- Inflamed gums
- Tooth darkening and discoloration
- Acute tooth sensitivity to cold and hot temperatures
- Pus coming out from around the tooth
- A small pimple-like bump on your gum
If you experience any of these symptoms, make an appointment to see Iwona Wysocka, DDS, right away. The longer you wait to address your symptoms, the worse the damage to your tooth and tooth nerves can become. A root canal can not only relieve pain but potentially save your tooth.
Are root canals painful?
The mention of root canals has struck fear and trepidation in the hearts of people young and old for countless years. However, today, root canals are painless and rather quick. Dr. Iwona Wysocka can perform a root canal in one to three visits.
During your visit with Dr. Iwona Wysocka, she begins by taking X-rays and assessing the damage to your tooth. Once she’s ready to begin, she numbs the region around the area she’ll be working on.
Then, Dr. Iwona Wysocka makes a tiny hole in your tooth and reaches through it with a small file. With the file, she scrapes away your infected and damaged nerve.
After she removes the nerve, Dr. Iwona Wysocka cleans and disinfects your tooth to make sure that there’s no bacteria left behind.
After that, Dr. Iwona Wysocka seals the area with a rubber filling called gutta-percha. Gutta-percha keeps bacteria from infiltrating the inner tooth.
Finally, she uses a filling to seal the hole shut or, if needed for optimal restoration, places a post on the next visit and takes an impression to make a crown. When the lab completes the fabrication of your crown, you return to the office for permanent placement.
